Arguments that DEFEND God’s Existence

These are arguments you can use to prove that God exists. Remember T.A.C.O.S.

1. Teleological – “Order + Design”

Explanation: There is great evidence of order and design in the earth, there must be a God who planned and created it all.

Illustration: Termites are known as the “recyclers of the earth.” They have been created to eat dead wood so it cleans out and recycles the earth. For example, when a tree falls in the forest termites are there to eat the wood to clean the ground. The only problem is that a termite doesn’t know the difference between a 2x4 on your house and dead tree limb in the forest. They are just doing what they have been created to do, eat wood.

Application: Take a look around you and observe different creations and noticed how there is a unique purpose in how it functions. Let that be evidence to you that it was designed by God of heaven and not some “big bang” or “evolutionary process.”

2. Anthropological – “man”

Explanation: This view takes a look at man and determines that because man is the way he is, there must be a God who created him. Consider the following:

  1. There is a common idea of God. People have the urge or sense to worship something greater than them.
  2. Mankind has ethics (right and wrong). Everyone has a sense of right and wrong. Although that may be reference to the person’s background, upbringing, or culture the fact everyone must consider is that where does our consciences originate.

Application: See…man has a void inside that only God can fill and satisfy. Anything apart from the God of the Bible will not fulfill completely. Sports, fame, money, success, promotions, family, etc only satisfies for the short time. God has created man to worship, serve, obey, and honor Him…and that is what ultimately satisfies.

“As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:
Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been
taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving. Beware lest any man spoil
you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men,
after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. For in him
dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
And ye are complete in him…”

3. Cosmological – “cause and effect”

Explanation: For every effect there is always a cause greater than the effect. The Greek word “cosmos” is translated “world.” The world is an effect of a greater cause (God).

In the Beginning

Application: The Earth is a big place and there must be Someone (God) greater than the earth to create it.

4. Ontological – “Perfect Being”

Explanation: God must exist because we have the concept of a perfect being. Jesus lived a perfect life on this earth. In a sense, man knows that perfection is possible, although man will never live sinless apart from Spirit filled life (Gal 5) and in the glorified heavenly body.

Illustration: The 1972 Miami Dolphins went undefeated (17-0) for the entire season, winning the super bowl over the Washington Redskins. Football fans refer to that year as the “perfect season.” Yet, no other NFL team has yet to finish an undefeated season. The 2007 New England Patriots came close, but lost their first and only game in the Super Bowl. Every team, player, coach, and fan KNOWS that a “perfect season” is possible, because it has been done before. Perfection is a reality!

Application: Man knows perfection is a reality, because of Jesus Christ living sinless on this earth, but no one has before or since Jesus Christ. Man is born into sin and is in need of a Savior to wash his sins away to be made complete.

and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men,
for that all have sinned.” - Romans 5:12

5. Scripture – “Bible”

Explanation: This view is from the Bible. God’s Word tells us that God exists and is the only true God. The previous 4 arguments defending the existence of God can be used without looking at the Bible. Yes, I have put Scripture verses below each view to strengthen each view, but those views can help prove God’s existence just by looking at creation. Then, most importantly, the Bible is the final and reliable authority.
